How Big CPG Brands are Adapting to Ozempic
While the drug has been a massive success for the drug’s creator, Novo Nordisk (stock up 28% this year) it did initially scare companies in the business of selling junk food to willing buyers.
Fast food companies, big consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands, and even airlines all stood to feel the effects of a thinner, more culinarily disciplined American population.
While the food industry has never met a diet trend it didn’t seek to capitalize on, GLP-1s at one point seemed to present an existential threat: the disappearance of cravings.
Changing consumer habits signal a shift towards health focused appetites, with consumers wanting smaller portions and more nutrients in their food.
The drug itself reduces appetite, meaning users need nutrient-dense meals to ensure they’re getting proper nutrition while eating less meals.
And here we are today— big CPG brands are adapting their product lines to meet new consumer demand.
Campbell’s is pushing their V8 vegetable juice drinks.
Nestle is investing in Vital Pursuit, their ‘healthier’ frozen meal alternative.
and the CEO of Danone thinks GLP-1 drugs will actually be really good for the yogurt industry
But their is a glaring juxtaposition between what these CPG execs are publicly signaling and what they really think.
Morgan Stanley predicts these new weight loss drugs will reduce the sales of baked goods by 3% over the next decade, and many other firms are cutting their forecasts for unhealthy CPG brands.
and a retail insider told me over the weekend he sees this as the biggest risk for CPG brands, but also the biggest opportunity for the ones that invest in healthy offerings.
Either way, this trend will be fascinating to watch, as will any potential Ozempic side effects that pop up in the future.
The real nail in the coffin for CPG will be when most Americans realize the healthiest way to eat is whole foods that don’t come in a colorful box…
