Why is Jason Stewart on Substack? To Make Money, Duh.
An interview with the co-host of How Long Gone
GM everyone. Yesterday really felt like the first full day of summer in NYC. Naturally I had to hit Washington Square Park & St. Jardim.
Today I am stoked to speak with
, aka ThemJeans, co-host of the seminal bi-coastal elite podcast How Long Gone.If you haven’t heard of HLG, it’s essentially required listening if you are:
a guy who works on his laptop doing creative projects in either NYC/LA
a Condé Nast employee
A 5th wave barista
Jason is in NYC and just recently launched his Substack again, so we linked to discuss why he’s writing again.
but first? Some news.
News
Rihanna is on the cover of Interview Magazine. The editorial spread was shot by Nadia Lee Cohen, who seems to be the most in-demand creative director and photographer at the moment. Cohen has been working closely with Kim Kardashian for Skims as well as her recent magazine covers. Cohen’s signature style evokes a sense of nostalgia. She pulls inspiration from vintage magazines like Lui and expertly recreates them in her work. The side by sides are pretty crazy
Francis Ford Coppola’s new movie is having trouble finding distribution. The legendary director of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now (oh wait some of you may only know him as Sofia Coppola’s dad) self-funded his latest film, Megalopolis, after studios declined to finance the ambitious project. The film features Adam Driver as an architect trying to rebuild NYC post some disaster in the future. Seems like a banger to me but apparently the film plays like what you’d expect from a confident, self-funded, 80+ year old auteur: a little all over the place. So distributors aren’t lining up to take the risk if the film flops.
Dude Perfect somehow raised $100M in funding for… something? I vaguely remembered these guys from doing viral “trick shots” on YouTube a few years ago, now they’ve raised a ton of money for expanding their trick shots around the globe and other vague media ventures. I never hear about this guys, maybe because half their audience is international? I think
put it well when she said, “without knowing anything about them: they are just so youth pastor coded”Does Snoopy love Zyn? The much discussed nicotine pouch taking the finance bro and newsletter writing worlds by storm is taking their product on the road. This viral photo shows even Snoopy is popping a 6mg in his lip to fire off some emails.
has spoken in-depth on her usage of Zyn to lock tf in and write Feed Me, showing Zyn has broad appeal. I need a 5,000 word essay in the Financial Times with the title “Is Zyn the Future of Work?”
My Conversation with
JB: What compelled you to restart Substack? And how has your writing evolved over the last few years?
JS: I was compelled to restart my Substack to write more and make money. My writing has evolved over the years by using Grammarly and a copy editor.
JB: Did you go to Frog Club yet? Any initial impressions? I went last month and thought the food was interesting but just fine.
JS: I'm going to Frog Club tonight! Who knows, maybe I will write a little bit about it.
JB: I read your most recent post on David Chang’s Netflix show, curious as to if you’d ever interested in pursuing your own food show either on YouTube or a big streamer?
I would like to have my own food show in some capacity, but not about travel or adventure or crazy shock value things, just eating good food with cool people, thats all you need.
Jason and Chris Black are taking How Long Gone on the road again this Summer, with tour dates in (checks notes) St. Paul, Minnesota. Tickets available here.
I’ll be pulling up to the Toronto one. If you are too, let’s tap into Seafood Palace.
SEE YOU TOMORROW!!!
