GM all. It’s a dreary day here in NYC. I feel the need to escape soon for a quick trip soon. Maybe Florida?
Here’s what you need to know today—
AI has a serious copyright problem. The New York Times explored how popular AI image generator, Midjourney, generates identical images as popular movies, tv shows, and games. This is mainly because these generative AI models are trained on entertainment as a source material. But raises questions as to AI’s exploitation of copyrighted material. Some AI companies have made commitments to protect intellectual property. Scott Galloway from the Prof G pod has made several good points around this topic, media companies should pool together and collectively bargain with AI companies to ensure fair payment for their source work in exchange for a fee. This generative AI models are nothing without rich source material to train off, and this extends to written material too.
A pastor charged with cryptocurrency fraud claims that ‘God made him do it’. Honestly, go off bro I hope this defense works out for you.
The company behind billboard advertising is rebranding. Lamar advertising is responsible for physical advertising slots all across the country. Their logo appears subtly under the ad usually. This week they unveiled a MAJOR rebrand. Just kidding they just made the margins bigger? I don’t know I can barely tell the difference.
This coffee packaging looks like a gummy supplement. Okay I’d really LOVE to interview the designer behind the Happy coffee packaging. What went through their mind when they created this packaging that could easily be confused with a daily vitamin or melatonin gummy? It evokes nothing associated with coffee whatsoever. While this MAY work with an e-commerce CPG brand, there’s no way this packaging transitions well to appearing on store shelves. I would think this was a misplaced item next to the La Colombe if I was walking in Target or Whole Foods. Near-instant recognition of a products purpose is very important when designing packaging.
Justice is releasing their first album since 2016. Wow this has me juiced. I love Justice and I can’t believe the last time they dropped an album I was literally a freshman in college. The first single features Tame Impala (of course it does) I’ll listen while working today.
