LinkedIn adding reels - and rumour is they will prioritize video post on the feed is ridiculous. It's such a horrible social platform and now I have to listen to people as I try to quickly get to the job listings that are mostly fake 😂

Yeah I’ve heard anecdotally the impressions metrics are wild. Any scroll past a video is an impression in feed. So the impressions don’t result in tangible page growth.

People don’t like watching talking heads, it’s boring. And so the existing content on Substack would have to pivot a lot in order to be compelling or compete with TikTok and YouTube. It’s a growth tactic but unfortunately doing something completely undifferentiated rather than differentiating through brand and changing the social narrative to be more around consuming written, thoughtful, long form content. It’s a missed opportunity and takes a bold vision to do it, but they’re confused.

Its such an odd time in the world of social video...

While I think the perception is that fast-paced (capcut driven) edits perform really well... so many creators are finding new success with longform content.

For example, I've been loving Oren John's longer YouTube videos on creative direction tips and motivation. Brenda Hashtag makes a 1hr video podcast that is just her with a mic sitting in an aesthetic space.

So I think there's room for maybe that type of longform video content to live on Substack? (ie how Throwing Fits is just uploading their podcast video here now)

I do agree though they seem to be confused and doing everything all at once.

But I certainly am going to be experimenting with the best way to do video on Substack that also works for my other channels. Probably will take a few tries to get a good mix right.

I love writing newsletters but I love making videos even more and find it really difficult to do both well on top of obviously working. So trying to find harmony with these changes and seeing how I can personally leverage the media tab to standout compared to just written content.

Very much appreciate the comment :)
