An era that began as a pure artistic statement morphed into just another corporatized meme.
The NYT reported that one in five hotels are now being paid by the city to house migrants. I’d love to understand the economic incentives driving these decisions, because it’s certainly not out of the kindness of their hearts.
Thanks for sharing!
During the pandemic, these struggling hotels faced huge vacancy rates.
At the same time, the migrant crisis began and the city struck multimillion dollar deals with them to house migrants.
Now the hotels don’t need to worry about vacancies and the city has somewhere to put thousands of people.
But now that the pandemic is long over and tourism has rebounded, there are simply less available hotels, driving up prices.
All around, the hotels and the city got what they wanted, but it’s by no means an effective, sustainable, long term solution.
That's a great explanation. That's one hell of a bandaid!
