Good morning all. It’s absolutely freezing in New York. This is the time of year where I really just want to wear all black and bundle up constantly. A trip to Florida is in the cards…
Headlines
The long awaited Young Thug trial is underway. His lawyer is trying to convince the jury that the popular phrase ‘Pushin P’ stands for ‘Pushing Peace’
Has anyone seen Saltburn? Its getting mixed reviews. Maybe I’ll go see it tonight.
NYT is relaunching nightlife reporting… I have a new goal now. Catch me trying to find the reporter at Clando.
Mixed Media Photography
4K photos on the grid? Just not cutting it for me anymore. Anyone can do that. I have always been fascinated with the juxtaposition of digital and tangible that comes with mixed media photography. Take your photo and bring it to life by printing it out, cutting it up, find new ways to compose the image. Let’s take a look at some inspo.
Love this example of a larger photo split into sections.
This image from The Row is simple, barely noticeable, but the ‘stapled’ on notes detailing what the model is wearing adds some visual intrigue and directly communicates what each piece is.
Similarly, love the messy aesthetic of this image. The handwritten annotations and the abundance of grain are great.
This collage by OnRunning is perfection. It seamlessly weaves together two visually distinct environments creating an alluring composition. OnRunning actually does some cool designs, I should look into them.
Love this ‘Holiday Fit Card’ from Tibi. It highlights several angles of the models look, includes handwritten notes on the styles, and frames this shoot around the concept of a holiday party look, with notes on the versatility of the fit. This reminds me of something you might have seen in a 1960s magazine.
I love this receipt show invitation from Rokh.
Ben Edgar has nailed mixed media compositions, typically showcasing his brands photography within this unpolished, concrete floor, studio aesthetic.
When in doubt, just print out your photo and take a photo of that. Its doing something.
Closing Thoughts
We live in a far-too digital world of perfect, photoshopped images. Gen Z is increasingly attracted to authenticity and finding meaning in between the lines. Mixed media photography feels raw, authentic, tangible, and there are endless ways to remix your images and repurpose content to create compositions like the above examples: working to build out your unique brand universe and visual communication style. Its all about creating aesthetic motifs, that over time become intertwined with how consumers view your brand.
