GM ALL! Hope youβre Thursday is off to a great start. Iβve been inside working a lot this week so my cultural observations are running dryβ¦
I did see this tweet from Beehiiv that really struck accord with me:
Fun fact: as soon as I quit therapy I started this newsletter soβ¦
Anyway hereβs some newsβ
TikTok is promoting long form video. One of the most dominant video platforms made popularized short form video, but are we about to see a massive shift? TikTok rolled out 10+ video content in December and is now incentivizing long-form, landscape video (yes you have to turn your phone) with βboosted viewsβ. This is amidst the backdrop of YouTube still being the most popular video platform for Gen Z despite its age. I see more people talking about and creators pivoting to long form video content (yapping if you will) and the benefits of creating better viewer relationships. A new term is being coined: Companion Content. This is type of videos that you have on in the background while you work, or are great for long views and more ad placements. I have heard stories of people making so much money from POV videos of them walking around NYC, shopping, or even one creator who uploads body camera footage of firefighters. Thereβs much to think about here and Iβll be writing a deep dive on this soon.
Birkenstock and Tekla are collaborating with a cozy new shoe. These updated Bostonβs have a soft footbed and extra padding. I think they strike a nice balance between the normality of the typical Boston and the over-the-top look of an Ugg fur lined one. The black color looks perfect for slinking out of bed and walking to get a cortado.
Polestarβs new car has a sick promo video. I love the kinetic typography in this video for Polestarβs new electric car. The company was founded by ex-Apple execs, so they know how to make a sick product video.
Nolita Dirtbag and Cava are teaming up. New Yorkβs quintessential meme page and your fav fast casual Mediterranean lunch spot are working together on some branded MEMES. I think these are really funny and I love when a brand leans in to create social content thats fun and irreverent. People love self aware brands. Perfect collab I believe was orchestrated by social strategist Rachel Karten.
Gotta run, prepare for another Friday deep dive tomorrow!
